Joseph Zumpano and Leon Patricios named as finalists in the 2009 Most Effective Lawyers award in International Law by the Daily Business Review. Daily Business Review

December 2009

Joseph Zumpano and Leon Patricios were named as finalists in the 2009 Most Effective Lawyers award in International Law by the Daily Business Review. The annual award recognizes South Florida lawyers who obtained significant victories for their clients. Mr. Zumpano and Mr. Patricios, former recipients of the Most Effective Lawyers award in International Law for their representation of Janet Weininger in the collection of nearly $24 million from Fidel Castro, Raul Castro, the Army of Cuba and the Republic of Cuba in 2007, were recognized again this year for their legal representation of a client against her former husband, who absconded with millions of dollars of marital assets. Mr. Zumpano and Mr. Patricios were successful in piercing the Bahamian Trusts in which the former husband attempted secret away marital assets. The assets recovered from the former husband included trust fund moneys, three homes in the Bahamas, bank accounts in the Bahamas and in Iowa, and multiple personal property items. The Daily Business Review cited the importance of the case, quoting Mr. Zumpano that there is a deep impact in South Florida when Courts in the Bahamas start holding people’s feet to the fire when they try to escape justice in the United States.
